Description
Born in Montreal in 1957, Paul Colpron studied theater before moving into the visual arts. He started out as an illustrator, mainly for posters and magazines. Apart from a few refresher courses to learn certain technical aspects of the trade, he was self-taught.
Then, one day in the early 90s, his brother gave him a set of carving knives he no longer wanted, as well as a pile of wood. Colpron, who had never attempted sculpture before, immediately set to work. Soon, one after the other, a whole gallery of secular statues began to emerge from their wooden cases, which he refined and colored realistically. Barely finished, the varnish still wet, they were snapped up first by friends, then by collectors. And so, almost spontaneously, began his career as a sculptor.
Since then, Colpron has been producing 8 to 12 original sculptures a year, as well as commissioning decorative works for commercial enterprises. The majority of his sculptures are held in private collections.
